How to play the Nine Stroke Roll

Four doubles resolving onto an accent — a staple roll length across styles.

About the Nine Stroke Roll

The Nine Stroke Roll is one of the 40 PAS rudiments, in the Roll family. Roll rudiments build a sustained sound out of singles, doubles, or buzzes.

How to practice it

Start slow enough to play it perfectly evenly, counting out loud or with the metronome. Keep your strokes relaxed and your accents clear. Once it's clean, raise the tempo a few BPM at a time using the speed trainer — clean and slow always beats fast and sloppy.

The Nine Stroke Roll is one of the advanced rudiments included with Drumolo Pro, alongside notation scoring and every time signature. Start with the free trainer to build the basics first.
